Polk County and Senator Harkin to

Announce New Affordable Housing Initiative in Des Moines

What:              Polk County and Senator Tom Harkin will kick-off a new affordable housing initiative that is the first of its kind in the country. The result of a $750,000 U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant, the initiative will allow Polk County to drastically improve the landscape of low income housing in Des Moines.

 

Polk County Supervisors and Senator Harkin will gather to celebrate the sale of the first rehabilitated home.

Background: Polk County will sell the home to Jennifer McCoy, a recent graduate of its Family Development Self-Sufficiency (FaDS) program. McCoy, 28, is a single mother of four young children.

                       

Senator Harkin secured the federal HUD grant for the Polk County Board of Supervisors. The county will work with the Polk County Housing Trust Fund utilizing minority contractors to rehabilitate more than 200 public housing units.

The MECC offered members a free weatherization training in September of 2006 to six members. All six passed the certification and are now able to bid on weatherization work with Polk County Public Works.

The fall course of the MECC will begin on September 5th at the Mickle Resource Center in Des Moines (1620 Pleasant.) Classes begin at 7:00 PM.

Congratulations

Primo Construction, MECC member from the fall of 2005, recently won a rehabilitation bid with Polk County for over $100,000! Primo will begin the work in the summer of 2006, congratulations to Laura and Franscisco!

Big Project

Fall 2005 MECC council members, Antonio Williams, Ken Williams and Larry Gatewood have formed their own company called G & W construction!  G & W have bid on Weaterization jobs with Polk County are have won bids for ten of the jobs.  G & W was also recently profiled in the Des Moines Business Record, the article can be found here:
